RYA Inspections
RYA Inspection - Top Tips & Resources
RYA Inspections provide a fantastic opportunity to discuss your current and upcoming operations/plans with an RYA Trainer from a relevant discipline offered at your training centre.
With a little planning you can easily avoid long actions plans. Top Tips for preparing below:
Check you have all the required paperwork in place
1) Complete the latest Inspection report form (IR1)
Check you are using the latest, 3 page 2022 version - Send this back to your inspector in advance!
Copy of IR1 - Availble for Download Here
2) Have you completed any previous set action plans?
Any outstanding actions become 'A' grades automatically on this year's action plan.
3) Do you have document evidence to show you meet all statements on page 2 of IR1?
For example - do you have a written down cancellation policy you can show?
Check over your powerboats!
Don't gain unnecessary A Grades on your action plan!
Common Omissions:
Expired first aid kits - must include 2 large & 2 medium wound bandages, Triangle Bandages and a Themo Protective Agent
No need to buy special first aid kits - why not just make them yourself?
Fire Extinguishers with no proof of when purchased - therefore unable to determine if they are at 5 year age requiring replacement.
Laminated map of the sailing area
Radio calling card - if your club/centre uses Radios (VHF or otherwise!)
Basic Tool Kit (A multi-tool will suffice!)
Vesssel Check Lists
What needs to be carried on Powerboats within an RYA Training Centre, couldn't be any clearer! See list of RYA Training Checklists below:
PWC (Jet Ski) Centres - Additional Equipment
For PWC Centres using a safety boat (or tender) to accompany PWC’s - Don't forget you also need to carry:
A Torch
6 meters of high visibility floating line
4 x High Visibility Training Marks
Must be large enough and visible enough for prevailing conditions (ie small dark blue or small white marks do not meet this requirement).
Space hoppers, with a length of rope and a sup board anchor provide a low cost, easy to carry solution to this!
PB2 Inland? - Do you have a plan for teaching coastal content?
For those Inland Centres offering PB2. Do you have a detailed plan of how you teach the coastal content inland?
Notably - do you have a Steering Compass and Hand Bearing Compass available for PB2. What exercises do you perform to meet the criteria on the course - do you course programmes reflect this? Have you produced some sort of 'chart' of your sailing area to facilitate this?
